The telescope has been set and left alone. The charts are weighted down against the wind, the lantern is turned low so it does not spoil the dark, and one candle is burning beside it because the wizard likes the company of a small flame more than the light. Your familiar has taken the end of the parapet. That is the seat with nothing in front of it — no stone, no shutter, no branch — just the drop and then the stars. It has been sitting there long enough that the wool blanket has gone cold on the ledge beside it. Nothing is going to happen tonight. That is not a disappointment; it is the whole point. You watch a sky like this the way you wait for a letter that may never be sent, and the waiting turns out to be the good part. The lantern will last until morning, and there is more blanket than one cat needs.
