Demonstrating magic attract and item attract. Casting magic or using items is quite likely to draw the enemy's attention within a certain radius (a bit larger than the AoE of Explosion). If your other characters are pummeling on the enemy non-stop, that's going to cancel out the effect, since attacking the enemy also draws the enemy's attention (that's why No Guard is so important).
