The Rumah Roy Podcast #71: Dr. John Payne–Of Rainforests, Rhinos & 50 Years in Malaysia

Datuk Dr John Payne joins us at the House for a wide-ranging conversation about wildlife, rainforests and the remarkable journey that brought him from England to Malaysia in the 1970s. Drawing on decades of experience in wildlife conservation, Datuk Dr John discusses the extinction of the Sumatran rhino in Malaysia, what conservation gets right and wrong, habitat loss, poaching, the oil palm industry, and why good intentions do not always lead to good outcomes. They also reflect on growing up before the digital age, university and independent thinking, AI and education, religion and power, the sacrifices involved in pursuing a life’s work, failure, ageing and whether we should remain optimistic about the future.
