In 1983, two Forest Service researchers fired rifles, handguns and a shotgun into boxes of wet silt and sawdust to find out what a person should carry in bear country. The bullet that went deepest came out of a lever gun, and they turned it down anyway.
In this video I walk you down the rack past eight lever guns folks swear by for grizzly country, from Grandpa’s thirty thirty to the Winchester Model 71 and the .405 Teddy Roosevelt called his “medicine gun.” Then I tell you the one I’d trust, why, and which ammunition it needs. Everything is backed by real ballistics, the Forest Service test, and the biggest study ever done on guns and bears in Alaska.
One safety note: the heavy bear loads I talk about are NOT safe in every rifle. Never fire them in a trapdoor Springfield or any copy of one, and always check your rifle maker’s manual and the ammunition maker’s approval list first.
What lever gun would you carry into grizzly country, and what’s in the tube? Tell me in the comments.
