Herodotus wrote that the Thracians were the most numerous people on earth after the Indians, and that if they ever united under one ruler they would be unstoppable. They never did. Then they seemed to disappear from history. Ancient DNA is now telling us who they really were and where they went.
This documentary goes from the earliest modern humans at Bacho Kiro Cave and the gold of Varna to the Bronze Age mothers revealed by mitochondrial DNA, the red hair and tattoos described by Greek writers, and the golden Odrysian kingdom of Teres, Sitalces and Seuthes III. We visit the Panagyurishte and Rogozen treasures, the Kazanlak and Sveshtari tombs, Golyama Kosmatka and Seuthopolis, then follow Spartacus, the Roman conquest of Thrace, Maximinus Thrax, and the arrival of the Slavs and the Bulgars. Finally we look at what genetic studies say about how much Thracian-era ancestry survives in people of Bulgaria and the Balkans today, and what the limits of that evidence are.
