Why did Max Verstappen decide to remain with Red Bull until 2030 when the team couldn't even guarantee how quickly it would close the gap to its rivals? Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies has revealed new details about the thinking behind Verstappen's long-term commitment, and the answer goes far beyond one upgrade or one strong race.
At the time of the negotiations, Red Bull was still fighting for performance. The team knew there was more development coming, but there was no guaranteed “magic upgrade” that would suddenly transform the car. According to Mekies, Red Bull was even uncertain about whether it could recover the final three tenths separating it from the pace it wanted.
So what convinced Verstappen to stay?
The answer appears to be Red Bull's long-term technical vision. Mekies highlighted the potential of the chassis department led by Pierre Wache and the development of Red Bull Powertrains, the Ford-backed engine project led by Ben Hodgkinson. Instead of selling Verstappen on one race or one upgrade, Red Bull presented a bigger plan for the seasons ahead.
Recent performances in Baku and Sepang have provided encouraging signs, including Verstappen's first victory of the 2026 season. But according to Mekies, those results weren't the reason Verstappen signed his future away. The Dutchman chose to believe in the people, the structure and the technical direction of Red Bull.
Now the biggest question is whether that gamble will pay off. Can Red Bull find those final three tenths and give Verstappen a car capable of fighting consistently at the front?
Watch the full breakdown to discover why Max Verstappen stayed with Red Bull until 2030, what Laurent Mekies revealed about the negotiations, and why Red Bull's chassis and power-unit projects could determine Verstappen's future success.
