A petty vassal king gathered the crowns of Media, Lydia, and Babylonia in just eleven years, and four choices over nearly 170 years helped give it all away. This video traces how Cyrus rose from King of Anshan to conqueror of Babylon, and why he held his empire by letting conquered peoples keep their gods, languages, and laws. We follow Cambyses II into Egypt and Darius I as he built satrapies, the Daric, the Royal Road, and Imperial Aramaic administration. Then come the four turning points: Darius's vendetta against Athens, Xerxes's war of prestige, the satraps' rejection of Memnon of Rhodes's scorched-earth plan before the Granicus, and Darius III's flight at Gaugamela. It ends at Pasargadae, where Alexander restored the looted tomb of Cyrus the Great.
