Situated in the northeastern part of the province, it is bordered by the Yangtze River to the north and embraces Lake Dongting; consequently, it has long enjoyed the reputation of being the "Gateway to Northern Hunan," as well as the distinction captured in the famous couplet: "Dongting boasts the world's finest waters; Yueyang boasts the world's finest tower." This National Historical and Cultural City boasts a history of urban settlement spanning over 2,500 years. Fan Zhongyan's *Memorial to the Yueyang Tower*—penned during the Northern Song Dynasty—catapulted the Yueyang Tower to worldwide fame, while the sentiment expressed within it—"to be the first to worry about the world's troubles, and the last to enjoy its pleasures"—has become an enduring symbol of the city's spirit. This region also marks the site where Qu Yuan cast himself into the river to die a martyr's death for his country; indeed, the Miluo River flowing through this land is the very cradle of the Dragon Boat Festival culture. As Hunan's second-largest economy and a pivotal regional hub in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, Yueyang serves as Hunan's sole international trade port situated directly along the river. Its Chenglingji Port ranks among the eight premier deep-water ports of the Yangtze, offering seamless connectivity from the river to the open sea. The city boasts a highly developed transportation network, with major arteries such as the Beijing-Guangzhou High-Speed Railway and the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway traversing its entire territory, thereby establishing a comprehensive, four-dimensional transportation framework encompassing water, road, air, and rail. Covering a total area of approximately 15,000 square kilometers, the city administers three districts and four counties, while also exercising jurisdiction over two county-level cities, and is home to a permanent population of nearly five million. It is renowned as a "land of fish and rice"—a fertile agricultural heartland—as well as an "International Wetland City" celebrated for its exquisite ecological beauty. The region is endowed with abundant tourism resources; in addition to the iconic Yueyang Tower, its scenic attractions include Junshan Island, the Qu Yuan Temple, and Zhangguying Village, making it a celebrated tourist destination recognized both domestically and internationally.
