Are micro-credentials and advanced university degrees actually improving our careers, or have we simply weaponised education into an endless, expensive corporate proxy game?
In this episode of The Classroom Skeptic, we push past the polished marketing brochures to analyse the raw empirical data behind higher education’s biggest trend: the rise of digital badges vs. traditional advanced degrees. As an educator holding a BA, PGCE, and an M.Ed., I recently faced a critical career crossroads: spend 5 years and tens of thousands of dollars on an online Doctorate, or bet on human communication and research literacy by building this channel instead.
To find out if this skepticism is justified, we dissect the methodology and structural boundaries of two massive global studies: Coursera’s Micro-Credentials Impact Report and the institutional data from UPCEA and Modern Campus. We follow the money, examine the hand-picked survey groups, and reveal the "educational paradox" trapping modern professionals into paying entry fees to two competing systems at the same time.
