Pelion's Chestnut Trails: Autumn Dreams in a Magical Wonderland - Greece

Late autumn in Greece, surprisingly, offers some of the most colorful canopies. The Pelion peninsula is known for its vast ancient hiking trail network (called Kalderimis) and its abundance of agricultural production. Olive, apple, pomegranate and, most spectacularly, chestnut trees blanket this mountainous peninsula. This seven mile (11 km) loop follows a dirt track through centuries old hillside chestnut groves. There is considerable uphill and downhill through out the walking loop with the trees towering above the track and forming a sea of amber leaves below. The walk took place in late October with the full array of autumn colors and just after the chestnut harvest leaving the track covered in spiny husks. The day we walked was shrouded in fog with the recent brief showers dripping from these mammoth trees' limbs.
