From Rice Cutting to Sand Barges — My Full 16 Minute Journey Hauling Rice, Soil and People in Mekong Delta Dear friends, Today's journey took me through almost everything we do in the Mekong Delta — from cutting rice, to hauling rice with a tracked tractor, to watching giant sand barges, and finally riding a small speedboat with local people. The field was still flooded after the rain. The cutting machine moved slowly, leaving wet straw behind. Farmers followed, collecting rice and putting it into big sacks. Their work is physically exhausting and can be dangerous under the hot sun. After cutting, we had to move the rice out. The only vehicle that can move in this deep mud is my small tracked tractor. We loaded more than twenty sacks onto it. The field was so flooded that turning around became a real challenge. My tractor does not have much power, so I have to rely on the engine, the tracks, and two friends pushing from behind. We had to scout the route ourselves, checking mud depth to make sure the overloaded tractor could safely pass. It took extra time, but checking first is much better than taking an unnecessary risk with such a heavy load. While we were working, a giant barge carrying soil and sand passed by on the nearby canal. These sand barges are very large and heavy, but they have to squeeze through very narrow waterways in the Mekong Delta. Watching them maneuver is always impressive and a little scary. Later, a small blue speedboat, we call it Vo Lai, came by carrying local people. These small boats are the fastest way to travel here. They create a big wake and move so quickly across the water. And between all the difficult work, there were still some simple moments that made the day feel a little warmer. As usual, when we finished, we sat down, drank water together, and smiled. It is only a small thing, but after hours of carrying heavy rice in the heat, seeing everyone smile always makes me happy. This journey has already brought rice cutting, flooded fields, overloaded tractors, giant sand barges, fast speedboats, and another unknown canal waiting ahead.
