SAVUTI OFFIGRID | BREAK CAMP | DEEP SAND | SAVUTI - KASANE | EP.4 | 2026 | BW

After four nights deep in the wilderness of Savuti, Day 5 is time to break camp. The fires are out, the tents come down, the recovery gear is packed — and the long drive back to Kasane begins. From Savuti, we head towards Ghoha Gate, tackling tough 40 km of demanding sand before continuing another 30 km towards Kachikau. The track becomes increasingly unforgiving, particularly as we approach Kachikau and enter the deep sands around Barangwe Valley. And then the inevitable happens. This is the reality of overlanding in northern Botswana: distances on a map can look deceptively simple, but sand, heat, weight and terrain can turn a short section of track into a serious test of man and machine. From Kachikau, the character of the journey changes. The deep sand gives way to approximately 100 km of tarmac towards Kasane — but by then, Savuti has already left its mark. The wider Chobe region has long been a meeting ground between people, wildlife, rivers and trade routes. Long before modern tourism roads and safari vehicles, communities moved through this part of northern Botswana following water, wildlife and seasonal routes. The Chobe River became an important natural corridor, while the area around present-day Kasane developed into a strategic meeting point close to the borders of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Savuti itself is one of the great landscapes of the Chobe region — famous not only for its wildlife, but for the remarkable changes in its water system.
