DESCRIPTION The video shows the entire process of a swallowtail caterpillar (Papilio machaon) which performs its penultimate molt as a caterpillar. Since insects have an exoskeleton (➛Wikipedia), their larvae can only grow if they replace the old exoskeleton in a molting process with a larger one. Two to three days before an imminent molt, the caterpillar forms a new exoskeleton that is strongly folded and detaches from the original exoskeleton during its formation. The detachment process is initiated about two days before molting by strong but very slow contractions of the body, which can only be made visible in an extreme time-lapse of video editing. When the new exoskeleton has finally detached itself from the old one, the "molting contractions" begin. These short, powerful contractions cause the old exoskeleton to burst behind the head of the caterpillar and the caterpillar can free itself by further contractions. After a break, the freshly skinned caterpillar eats the old exoskeleton (exuvia). CAMERA Sony FDR-AX 100E 4K mode.
