West of the Volga, in the city we now call Volgograd, the winter still comes down hard enough to kill a man left in the open. In the last days of January 1943, around 91,000 German soldiers walked out of the frozen ruins of a city then called Stalingrad — hands raised, rifles left in the snow. They were what remained of the 6th Army, not long before one of the strongest fighting forces in Hitler's Wehrmacht. Of those 91,000 men, only about 6,000 ever came home.
