A two-hour walk through Vietnamese street kitchens, from a morning bowl of pho to a whole roasted veal at night. It starts at Pho 9 Chuong (53 Tran Van On, Dong Hoa, Di An): trays of sliced brisket, glossy beef tendon and beef balls, flat rice noodles, hot broth poured over the bowl, takeaway bags filled at the counter. Then golden banana fritters, sweet potato cakes and puffed sesame cakes at Banh Chuoi Chien Co Dung; sticky rice heaped with shredded chicken at Co Yen's sidewalk stall on Tran Nhan Tong; cao lau with braised char siu and crispy crackers at Lien Cao Lau (47/30 Tran Hung Dao, Hoi An); charcoal-grilled pork and crispy fried spring rolls at Bun Cha Ha Noi, 187 Trung Nu Vuong (bun cha 40,000 dong, spring roll 15,000 dong each); duck porridge and duck salad on a rainy afternoon at Hanh Chao Vit (1220 Truong Chinh, Cam Le); Hue-style braised pork banh mi crisped over charcoal at the Hue Ngon cart by the Han River; grilled rice-paper sandwiches at Di Lan (209 Le Thanh Nghi) and fried rolls wrapped in mustard leaves at Binh (308 Le Duan); nem lui pork skewers over red coals at Bo Lui Be Na (377/26 Hai Phong, Thanh Khe; nem lui 9,000 dong a skewer); and finally a whole veal turned over charcoal, split and sliced at Be Thui Cau Mong (42 Ham Nghi), where a large plate is 350,000 dong.
No narration, no staging - just the food and the sound of the street.
