On 18 October 2026, Russia's own Defence Ministry said its air defences shot down 1,256 Ukrainian drones in a single day and seven long-range Flamingo cruise missiles, after claiming 1,015 drones overnight, 512 of them over the Moscow area. In this briefing we explain what the FP-5 Flamingo is: a missile designed and built in Ukraine by Fire Point, with a claimed range of about 3,000 km, a warhead of about 1,150 kg and a price of about $600,000. We go through the targets it has already been sent against deep inside Russia, from the Votkinsk Iskander plant to explosives, rocket and drone-parts factories in Samara, Cheboksary, Volgograd and Kirov, and why Ukraine fires it together with hundreds of cheap FP-1 drones that stretch Russian air defences. We look at Russia's strikes on sites it links to Flamingo production, the missile's real weaknesses, why a weapon Ukraine builds itself matters while Washington pressures Kyiv, and what Russia did to Ukraine on the same night. And the honest part: 1,256 and seven are Russia's shoot-down claims, and Ukraine has not said what the Flamingos targeted. Facts as reported up to 19 October 2026.
