Born in Poland, Koussevitzky rose to international fame as the chief cantor of Warsaw's magnificent Tłomackie Synagogue. Following World War II, he settled in America and became the celebrated cantor of Congregation Beth El in Boro Park, Brooklyn. Blessed with an extraordinary tenor voice, breathtaking high notes, remarkable vocal control, and deeply expressive interpretation of Jewish prayer, Koussevitzky became one of the defining figures of the Golden Age of Chazzanut. This rare 1964 recording preserves his magnificent interpretation of the Friday evening prayers, including Kabbalat Shabbos, Lecho Dodi, Maariv, Hashkiveinu, and Kiddush.
