"But Concerning That Day and Hour": Does Matthew 24:36 Change the Subject? Dispensationalist scholar John Walvoord argued that "this generation" in Matthew 24:34 refers not to Jesus's own audience, but to some future generation that lives to see the "signs" begin. But that reading runs into a grammatical seam most people never notice — the Greek phrase peri de ("but concerning" / "now concerning") that opens verse 36. In this video, I trace peri de through Paul's letters — six times in 1 Corinthians (7:1, 7:25, 8:1, 12:1, 16:1, 16:12) and three times in 1 Thessalonians (4:9, 4:13, 5:1) — where it consistently marks a hard pivot to a new, distinct topic. If that pattern holds in Matthew 24:36, then Jesus isn't continuing to describe the same event under a different aspect — he's shifting from "this generation will see it" (v. 34) to a genuinely separate question: the unknown day and hour of the Parousia. I also walk through a deeper problem for the dispensationalist "sign-watching" model: every early sign Jesus lists (wars, false Christs, famines, earthquakes) is explicitly indistinguishable from ordinary historical calamity until after the fact — including the "clearer" sign of the abomination of desolation. That creates a circularity in Walvoord's own framework: the identity of "this generation" depends on recognizing genuine signs, but genuine signs can only be recognized once you already know which generation you're in. I also address the strongest dispensationalist counter-move — the "convergence" argument (Hal Lindsey's 1948/1967/1988 calculations) — and why it only softens the problem into a probability question rather than solving it. By contrast, reading Jesus as speaking directly to the disciples in front of him removes the circularity entirely: the referent of "this generation" is fixed by grammar and audience before a single sign appears, fulfilled within their lifetime in the AD 70 destruction of Jerusalem.
