Justin Murphy, Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategy & Business Development, ADNOC Logistics & Services, examined how changing trade flows, alternative fuels, regulation and fleet readiness are reshaping commercial strategy in maritime logistics at TMS TACCC 2026. His presentation highlighted that the energy transition is not simply a question of identifying the fuel that will dominate the future. Instead, commercial decisions need to consider evolving cargo flows, geography, tonne-miles, refinery locations, fuel availability and the investment requirements associated with different trade routes. Justin also examined the growing gap between environmental technology adoption and alternative-fuel capability across the global fleet. He highlighted how efficiency technologies are becoming increasingly widespread, while alternative-fuel readiness remains more limited, creating potential differences in vessel competitiveness as regulatory and market requirements evolve. Addressing the outlook for ammonia, he highlighted the gap between technical feasibility, commercial viability and the development of scalable trades. The presentation emphasised the importance of assessing cost, offtake, infrastructure and timing rather than relying solely on the potential of a particular fuel or technology. Justin also explored the different pace of regulatory development across global and regional markets, noting the immediate commercial implications of measures such as FuelEU Maritime and EU ETS, alongside continued uncertainty around the global IMO Net-Zero Framework. He concluded by highlighting the importance of investment readiness and commercial discipline. For emerging energy trades, successful investment requires credible offtake, competitive production costs, financing, terminal and bunkering infrastructure, and a clear start date and trade route. His central message was that being right about the fuel is not enough if the underlying trade, timing or fleet supply does not support the investment case. #TMSTACCC #Maritime #Decarbonisation #Sustainability #ClimateAction #Shipping #EnergyTransition #AlternativeFuels #MaritimeLogistics #Investment #ADNOC #ADNOCLogisticsAndServices
