Robertsbridge Level Crossing, East Sussex

Date filmed: Saturday the 17th of January / 18th of April 2026 Route: The Hastings Line Robertsbridge (RBR) Station Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing with CCTV (MCB-CCTV) Location: Brightling Road / Station Road, Robertsbridge (TN32 5DJ) Another two-dater for you today. Here we are next to Robertsbridge station, which will soon double up as the connection point to the nearby Rother Valley Railway / Kent & East Sussex Railway when the line gets completed between Northbridge Street and Bodiam, and at this crossing whose setup is some ten years old now. The level crossing was fully renewed in 2016, and despite being controlled from that active signal box adjacent, it has to be controlled via CCTV due to visibility constraints. Little of this crossing has changed since its renewal, and it's holding up well. The old GWE barriers from the previous setup remain knocking around Rolvenden Yard. Along-side a few Southeastern services, a track-recording train doing the rounds also features on the first date, all under lights. The second date was a few months later in April, when I attended an event at the Rother Valley Railway to showcase how it's progressing ready for the connection with the Kent & East Sussex Railway (currently only running between Tenterden and Bodiam) - very well! A Hastings Diesel 'Thumper' can be seen first leaving the Rother Valley Railway's current site, then later departing south with some impressive engine growl, so volume up! This train was running various shuttles between Robertsbridge Junction station and Northbridge Street, the current limit of operations for the Rother Valley Railway, but not for too long. As of publishing, works are on-going to install the crossing there at Northbridge Street, and the crossing deck with road markings is all in place.
