1960s The Magic Kingdom Before It Changed Forever - Disneyland, CA
For generations, a trip to Southern California meant at least one day at Disneyland in Anaheim. Families drove from places like Phoenix and San Francisco to take their kids through the gates of Main Street for the first time. And newlyweds from all over the United States came to take pictures in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle and call it their honeymoon. You bought an A-to-E ticket book at the booth and walked all over the park. You stopped to listen to the mechanical birds singing in the Enchanted Tiki Room, a place where nobody could believe those birds were not real. In the afternoon, there was a line waiting in front of Pirates of the Caribbean. And when the Matterhorn was still new, a little girl from Kansas City rode it seven times in one day on an E-ticket that cost 85 cents, while her father sat on a bench on Main Street eating popcorn and waiting for his daughter. The lines in front of Pirates and the Matterhorn are still there, but the park around them has never stopped changing. Adventure Thru Inner Space disappeared, and in 1987 Star Tours took its place. The PeopleMover, the train that glided through Tomorrowland and that millions of people once loved, stopped running in 1995, and the track still sits empty above your head to this day. And the redhead in Pirates of the Caribbean, the woman three generations of guests saw every time the boat drifted past, was replaced by a female pirate in 2018. Today, a one-day ticket at the highest price is 224 dollars. If Disneyland is part of your family memories, hit subscribe. We go back to the places people actually used to drive to, one place at a time, and the next destination might be yours.
