José Mourinho is back at Real Madrid—but is he still the same "Special One" who arrived at the Santiago Bernabéu in 2010? Sixteen years ago, Mourinho arrived in Madrid at the absolute peak of his career. He had just won the Champions League with Inter, completed a historic treble, and previously conquered Europe with Porto before becoming a Premier League champion with Chelsea. Now, in 2026, Mourinho is 63 and returning to Real Madrid after a very different chapter of his career. His last Champions League triumph came back in 2010, his last major league title was the 2014–15 Premier League with Chelsea, and his recent jobs have included Tottenham, Roma, Fenerbahçe and Benfica. But despite all the differences, there are some fascinating similarities. Just like in 2010, Real Madrid are coming off a trophyless season. Just like then, the pressure to win is enormous, the dressing room is packed with superstar egos, and Mourinho has a new generation of players to integrate.
