Maersk Alabama Hijacking (2009): 4 Days of Terror at Sea | The True Story

On April 8, 2009, the American-flagged cargo ship Maersk Alabama was attacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean. What began as a pirate attack on a massive container ship soon turned into a dramatic hostage crisis. The crew managed to regain control of their vessel, but Captain Richard Phillips was taken hostage and forced into a small lifeboat with the pirates. Far away from land, a tense standoff began. For days, the tiny lifeboat remained surrounded by the vast Indian Ocean while U.S. Navy ships moved into the area. USS Bainbridge and other American naval vessels monitored the situation as negotiations continued and the safety of Captain Phillips remained the priority. On April 12, 2009, the standoff finally came to a dramatic end when U.S. Navy SEALs rescued Captain Phillips. In this documentary, we reconstruct the Maersk Alabama hijacking from the initial pirate attack and the crew's struggle to regain control of the ship, to the lifeboat hostage crisis, the arrival of the U.S. Navy, the tense standoff, and the final rescue operation. This is the real story behind one of the most widely known maritime hostage crises of the 21st century. ⚓ MAERSK ALABAMA — 2009 🌊 INDIAN OCEAN 🚢 SOMALI PIRACY 🛟 LIFEBOAT HOSTAGE STANDOFF 🇺🇸 U.S. NAVY RESCUE Watch until the end to understand how a small lifeboat in the middle of the ocean became the center of an international hostage crisis.
