Eckhart Tolle imagines a deal. A god comes down and offers him, in his twenties, a great body to enjoy for three decades, in exchange for twenty years of his life. He says he would have taken it. He would be dead now, having spent those years on ego satisfaction, and died young exactly as promised. That is how strong body identification can be. For some people it is pride; for Eckhart, for many years, it was the opposite, a negative identification that made him unhappy. Both are ego. A miserable ego, he says, is just as strong as a proud one; "why does this always happen to me" is as much a narrative as "I am the greatest". A negative identification may even be easier to let go of, because you are more motivated. The positive kind is harder. When every mirror and every posted photo says look at me, why would you look deeper? Then time. Put a fresh apple on the windowsill and wait a few weeks. The same thing happens to every body; it just takes decades. People who built their identity on how they looked move into years of growing unhappiness, comparing themselves to the young and feeling diminished, unless they break through to a deeper level. Some do, some cannot; by old age the patterns can be too rigid, and we have all met the result. But old age is meant to be a flowering of consciousness. As the body begins to dissolve, something else can emerge. His advice is to go to that deeper level before time starts to erode you, and if not then, at any point after, because this moment is always the best moment to step out of time.
