Did you know you can rent an entire country? $70,000 a night — two-night minimum. This is Liechtenstein.
160 km² of Alpine valley between Switzerland and Austria. No airport. No army. No national debt. Fewer than 41,000 residents — yet its banks manage roughly 70x the country's entire GDP, and its GDP per capita (~$207,000) is second only to Monaco.
A century ago this was one of the poorest corners of Europe — a farm economy so broke it abolished its own army in 1868. This video is the story of how it got rich:
• The 1923 customs union with Switzerland and the adoption of the Swiss franc
• The 1926 company law that let the world park money in a village with no port — the Anstalt, the Stiftung, secret foundations, nominee directors, brass-plate companies
• The numbers: 12.5% flat tax, one business per 8 citizens, CHF 550+ billion under management
• The twist — one of the most industrialised countries on Earth: Hilti tools and the world's largest producer of false teeth, shipped to 120 countries
• The 2008 stolen-disk scandal that ended banking secrecy, and the reinvention that followed — including the world's first comprehensive token law (2019)
• The 57% of the workforce that commutes in from Switzerland and Austria every day
• And yes — the time the whole country listed itself on Airbnb. Snoop Dogg was turned down.
