For generations, groundnuts have been more than a crop in The Gambia. They are a way of life — a symbol of resilience, livelihood and national pride. In this video, we journey back in time to the golden era of the 1970s when the ‘groundnut season’ electrified rural communities and Seccos across the country buzzed with activity. In the 1970s, The Gambia’s economy revolved around groundnuts. The crop accounted for the bulk of export earnings - feeding families, sending children to school and building communities. In those days, when the harvest season came, the whole village moved as one. You could hear the lorroes, the drums, people singing as they pushed carts to the Secco.
