Just When I Thought This Couldn’t Get Any More Ridiculous

Pep Guardiola has responded to Manchester City’s financial-rules verdict—and as an Arsenal fan, I have plenty to say about it. People were calling Arsenal cheats because they didn’t like how we played football, while backing Manchester City to “save football”. I react to Pep’s statement and explain why the double standards around Arsenal make this whole situation even more ironic. There’s another potential twist: City helped build their era of success by signing players from Arsenal. Could Arsenal eventually take advantage if City players become available? Nothing is agreed, but the possibility of that reversal is quite a storyline. I also react to Micah Richards’ video, Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s comments about City’s ownership, and the news of David Ornstein’s upcoming appearance on The Overlap following his reporting on the case. City continue to deny wrongdoing and intend to appeal. The eventual punishment remains unresolved—but the reactions around football are already giving us plenty to discuss.
