ENGLISH LESSON: Using "let's" and "lets"
SYNOPSIS
Mr. Dan was happy to be outside in the fresh mountain air. He decided to climb to the mountaintop! As he hiked upwards, he sang his English translation of the popular Indonesian children's song,"Naik-Naik ke Puncak Gunung". Then as he started to sing the original version of the song, he was joined by Colin and Anjali! Having his friends along with him made it much easier to climb to the top of the mountain.
ENGLISH TIPS IN THE VIDEO:
Which sentence is correct?
1. "Let's climb to the mountaintop"
OR
2. "Lets climb to the mountaintop"
Hopefully, you watched the video and chose #1. There is a big difference between LET'S and LETS.
LETS means he, she, or it ALLOWS something:
• Fred lets Mary ride her motorcycle to work.
• She lets herself eat junk food once a week.
LET'S (with an apostrophe) is a contraction of "let" and "us."
• Let's have dinner together!
• Let's go!
As you can see, LET'S is a command, often used in an invitation.
Understanding whether to use either 'let's' or "lets" might be a bit tricky . . . but it's much easier if you grasp it NOTE BY NOTE!
