Storm Manja battered Germany's North Sea coast on October 25, 2026, bringing powerful winds, coastal flooding, transport disruptions, and a major ship collision in Bremerhaven. A cruise ship carrying 3,350 people struck two container ships while leaving port, damaging vessels and prompting police to investigate whether the captain acted with proper care.
In this video, we examine how storm-force gusts pushed the Mein Schiff 3 into the nearby ships, why the Canary Islands voyage was canceled, and how a storm surge flooded ports and coastal communities. Norderney recorded water almost six feet above normal high tide, while flooding reached Hamburg's fish market and forced vehicles to be towed. Emergency crews also rescued people from cars surrounded by rising water.
The storm's impact extended beyond the coast. In Freiburg, damage to a power substation and fallen trees left around 10,000 homes without electricity for hours, affecting emergency operations at the university hospital. Fallen trees disrupted rail services, trains were suspended to Sylt, and ferry cancellations left several North Sea islands isolated.
On Monday, October 26, federal maritime officials issued another storm surge warning for the North Frisian coast, where high tides reached five to six and a half feet above normal. The Mein Schiff 3 remained in port as the investigation continued. Germany's experience also raises questions about how vessels are managed during severe coastal weather.
