William Notman (1826–1891) left Glasgow for Montreal under the cloud of financial ruin, but within a decade he transformed his fortunes and the art of photography, earning international acclaim and changing how the camera was understood in the late nineteenth century. Sarah Parsons is an Associate Professor in Art History and Visual Culture at York University. Visit www.aci-iac.ca to read the online art book.
