It's scary to start out as an actor or actress, and even worse, not knowing whether or not you should study acting and how to do it. Watch this because I'm going to tell you the truth and answer your question.
In this video, I'll help you from my perspective and experience regarding this very personal decision, which depends on your medium- and long-term goals in your acting career.
Many people say, "I want to be an actor/actress," but they aren't really willing to put in the work and years of preparation required if you're taking this career seriously (theater or dramatic/independent film).
The reality is that learning to act takes time, practice, and a lot of trial and error, especially if you want to have range and be multifaceted—that is, act in front of the camera and also on stage in plays. Honestly, the best actors and actresses in history have come from the theater. They have their roots in solid training, exploring various techniques (Stella Adler, Strasberg, Meisner, Stanislavski) and interpreting a wide range of characters from classic authors and works of the dramatic world—characters by Chekhov, Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde, Eugene O'Neill, and others.
However, deciding whether you should study acting depends on the type of actor you want to be. If your focus is more commercial, or you're looking for fame and fortune, you don't necessarily need to spend 4-6 years in an acting or theater school to start working as an actor. We increasingly see cases in this globalized and commercialized world of influencers, TikTokers, models, singers, or people with large audiences (Cara Delevingne, Ed Sheeran, etc.) venturing into series and films. Many of them have never taken an acting course or workshop. Very sad!
In fact, the biggest movie star in the world today (The Rock) started as a wrestler and gradually made his way into films. He never went to university or acting school. He took workshops and hired private coaches over time, but it's not like he's dedicated years of his life to studying and practicing acting as a lifestyle. He has charisma, physique, presence, and a lot of personality, which makes him very interesting on camera, and it's good business to have him in series (Ballers) or franchise films (Jumanji, Fast and Furious, etc.).
This DOES NOT MEAN that you shouldn't study and prepare. The Rock is a force of nature. I sincerely believe that acting is an ART, a very noble and serious profession that requires physical, vocal, and stage presence techniques that allow you to better use your body and instrument when embodying characters and telling stories. Stories that inspire our society and help us grow and improve every day.
Taking acting classes will allow you to get to know yourself better and to play, experiment, and delve deeply into the analysis of the human condition, which, at the end of the day, is what will make you a good actor, enabling you to act well and portray various characters in film, Netflix, television, Hollywood, etc.
If you're still very young, let me tell you something: You have your WHOLE LIFE AHEAD of you to prepare, learn, and absorb various techniques and secrets to become the best actor or actress you can be. This is a marathon, not a sprint, so if you have passion, discipline, and perseverance, YOU WILL SURELY SUCCEED.
If you don't have the support of your family, seek help from foundations, take out a loan, save money, work during the holidays if you're still in school. Do everything in your power to take classes, virtual workshops, via Zoom, and here on YouTube through my videos.
