WHY Are There SO Many Freight Trains Here | Boppard🇩🇪

Freight train spotting in Boppard, Germany, on the famous Left Rhine Railway (Linke Rheinstrecke), one of Europe's most scenic railway routes! With freight trains following one another at remarkably short intervals, this turned into an extraordinary day of railfanning in the beautiful Middle Rhine Valley (Mittelrheintal). But why was this railway so incredibly busy? Due to major reconstruction work on the parallel Right Rhine Railway (Rechte Rheinstrecke), international freight traffic had to be diverted along the western bank of the Rhine. As a result, freight trains frequently followed each other often with just one signal block apart! The Rhine Valley is one of Europe's most important corridors for international rail freight. Freight trains passing through Boppard connect major ports and logistics terminals in the Netherlands and Belgium with industrial regions in Germany and destinations further south in Switzerland, Austria and Italy. The route is particularly important for intermodal transport, with numerous container and trailer shuttles linking European logistics hubs and carrying goods across international borders. During my visit to Boppard, I filmed a variety of long freight trains operated by companies including BLS Cargo, SBB Cargo International, TX Logistik, Lineas and ECCO Rail. There were many international container and trailer shuttles, several of which have never appeared on my channel before, alongside chemical tank trains and some very unusual special transports, and even an old BR 218. And what a setting! The railway winds its way along the banks of the River Rhine, surrounded by steep hillsides, vineyards and historic castles. Few places offer such a remarkable combination of beautiful scenery and intensive railway operations.
