The detective who ran this case in 2017 retired in 2020 with no charge filed. On Day 3 the defense walked him to that fact, and he answered, "When I left, I left." The uncle on trial is David Prevatte. Paitin Fields was five years old when she died in November 2017 in Pender County, North Carolina. David, her uncle, was named a suspect in 2018 and arrested in February 2022, and he is charged in her death, along with other charges. He is presumed innocent. The State gave notice in February that it will not seek the death penalty (StarNews). These are the five moments from Day 3 a viewer who missed the day needs to see, in the order court happened. The thread through all five: how much of this case still rests on what detectives said and recorded in 2017, and what this jury is allowed to do with it. Two recorded family interviews came in, and the judge let jurors use them only to back up or undercut what the family already said on the stand. Keep that limit in mind every time a tape plays. And hold one question the whole way through: if no one had been charged when the lead detective walked away in 2020, what did the State learn before 2022? These five moments do not answer it. --- KEY MOMENTS 0:00 What this video is, and a preview 0:22 Intro 1:22 Video starts: Top Moment 1. The fight over State's 30, then Lisa Hunt's 2017 hospital interview. It earned its place because the jury never saw the argument. With jurors out, the State asked to use the tapes as substantive evidence, the defense said corroboration or impeachment only, and the State agreed to the limit. Watch what that limit means for every tape after it. 17:40 Top Moment 2. The defense cross of retired Det. John Leatherwood, and the turn of the day. He describes David at the hospital as emotional and angry but not crying, confirms the tapes were the complete interviews, and agrees no one had been charged or arrested when he retired in 2020. It made the five because the four-year gap comes from the detective's own mouth. 34:28 Top Moment 3. State's 32, detectives with Dale Hunt, David's stepfather, in 2017: "It's either you or that man sitting out there." It made the five because it shows how early the focus narrowed to the two men in that house, and because the detective lays out two times for when David got home that night that do not match. 41:07 Top Moment 4. The judge keeps Savannah Fields, Paitin's sister, off the broadcast. No voice, no video. A process moment, and it belongs in the five: the public will not see or hear her testimony, and you watch the court make that call in open court before the jury returns from lunch. Ask what that protects, and what it costs the people watching. 43:44 Top Moment 5. Lt. Daniel Wells and the earbuds and charging cords from the bedroom. Jurors glove up and handle the evidence themselves. He tells them that after lab reports came back he looked again and saw the insulation stretched, with small ripples. It made the five because this is the physical evidence the State wants in the jury's hands. Hold onto when that detail surfaced: only after the lab.
