In the Blue Ridge fire-tower country of the Pisgah forest, a young lookout named Lonnie Maddox took a steel tower on a ridge for the fire season of 1958, alone, and found 7 rules penciled inside the map-table drawer in the hand of the man who kept it before him. He kept 6 of them all summer, wrote down everything that happened on the night he broke the seventh, folded the pages into the season's log for the district ranger, and never sent it.
