Psychology of Learning: Why You Forget What You Study and How Studying for Hours Can Still Leave You Blank: 3 Mistakes
This video breaks down the psychology of learning, why you forget what you study, and why hours of preparation can still leave you staring at a blank exam question. German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus helped establish the forgetting curve, showing how retention can decline after learning. The illusion of competence explains another part of the problem: recognizing an answer on the page can make you feel ready before you can produce it from memory. Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke’s 2006 study on retrieval practice, also called active recall, research on spaced repetition, and experiments on sleep and memory consolidation help explain why you can feel prepared tonight and struggle to remember the answers tomorrow. We explore three study mistakes, research-based study tips, and a two-minute test that helps you decide what to work on first tomorrow.
If you’ve ever reread your notes, felt prepared, and then struggled to explain the answer with the book closed, you already know the feeling this video is about.
Which of the three study mistakes have you been making the longest? Tell me in the comments.
