These components are critical for allowing the caliper to float properly over the rotor, ensuring even pressure on both the inner and outer brake pads. Symptoms of Worn or Swollen Bushings Uneven Brake Pad Wear: Often, the inner pad will wear down significantly faster than the outer pad because a seized or stiff pin prevents the caliper from sliding to engage the outer pad. Seized or Stiff Guide Pins: Swollen rubber bushings can cause excessive drag, making it difficult for the pins to move freely in the bracket bore. In severe cases, they may seize completely, keeping the caliper clamped even after you release the brake pedal. Abnormal Noises: Worn bushings can lead to rattling or clunking sounds, especially over bumps, as the caliper is no longer securely dampened. Brake Drag and Heat: If the pins don't retract properly, the pads stay in constant contact with the rotor, generating excessive heat, a burning smell, and reduced fuel economy. Common Causes of Failure Incompatible Lubricants: Using petroleum-based grease is a major cause of failure; it degrades and swells the rubber over time, turning it to "mush" or causing it to stretch and bind in the bore. Environmental Corrosion: Especially in "rust belt" regions, moisture and road salt can infiltrate the rubber boots, leading to corrosion inside the guide pin holes. Age and Wear: Rubber naturally degrades over time; some experts recommend inspecting and servicing these pins annually. Maintenance and Repair Tips Use Proper Lubricant: Always use silicone-based grease or high-quality silicone paste. Silicone is compatible with rubber and will not cause it to swell or degrade. Clean the Bores Thoroughly: When replacing bushings, use brake cleaner and a wire brush to remove all old grease and corrosion from the caliper bracket bores. Correct Placement: On many vehicles, particularly Hondas, the pins are not identical. One pin typically has the rubber bushing while the other is smooth. The bushed pin is often the "trailing" pin. Placement varies by model: if the caliper is in front of the rotor, the bushed pin often goes on top; if it is behind, it often goes on the bottom.
