Today I invite you to take a walk along Lower Lozenets District in Sofia.
As I mentioned in the previous video about the Upper Lozenets • The Calm Streets of Upper Lozenets Distric... both parts of the Lozenets district are relatively large residential districts South of the centre of Sofia, both of them located along Cherni Vrah boulevard • A Relaxing Walk Along Cherni Vrah Boulevar... While Lower Lozenets – the Northern part of the district – begins from Evlogiy Georgiev boulevard • Serene Walk Sofia at Sunset | Evlogiy Geor... and has an altitude of 550-560 meters above sea level, the Upper Lozenets has an altitude of 600-620 meters above sea level and this difference created the provisory distinction and separation between the two parts. Another boulevard that crosses the district is James Bourchier boulevard, named after the Irish journalist and political activist James David Bourchier who acted as an intermediary between the Balkan states in the beginning and at the conclusion of the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913 and has had the recognition of the Bulgarian people even during his lifetime.
There is a travelogue from the 17th century that describes this area as a beautiful land near back then Sofia full of vineyards and orchards. Until the end of 19th century, the area was still outside the city. In 1889 there was build a ceramic factory which was destroyed decades later and with the expansion of the city, the first houses started to appear.
Later, around the WWI, the Municipality of Sofia donated plots of that land to war refugees and around 1921 the two parts of Lozenets district officially took shape.
So, let's take a visit to part of the Lower Lozenets district. Enjoy the walk.
