A major political and military development has been announced in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC) has been succeeded by a new politico-military coalition known as the **Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN)**.
According to an official announcement published by AFC/M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka on October 12, 2026, former Congolese President *Joseph Kabila Kabange* has been appointed to lead the newly created FRN.
The announced leadership includes:
Joseph Kabila Kabange — President
Corneille Nangaa — Vice President
Bertrand Bisimwa — Vice President
Major General Sultani Makenga — Vice President and Chief of the General Staff of the Congolese Revolutionary Army (ARC)
Professor Freddy Kaniki — Secretary General
Benjamin Mbonimpa — Deputy Secretary General
Désiré Rukomera — Permanent Secretary of the Founders’ Council
This announcement comes only days after Joseph Kabila warned that the DRC was facing a serious national crisis. In his latest address, he promised to inform the Congolese people, within the coming hours, days and weeks, about what they should undertake together to “save the country.”
The creation of the FRN appears to be the first major development connected to that promise. It also places the former Congolese president at the head of a coalition directly opposed to the administration of President Félix Tshisekedi.
Manzi Willy described October 12, 2026 as a historic date and presented the coalition as an effort to unite Congolese people around a common political cause.
This Rwanda Updates report explains how the FRN was created, the leadership structure announced in Goma, its connection to Kabila’s recent speech and the possible implications for the political and security crisis in the DRC.
Several important questions remain unanswered, including the FRN’s complete programme, its membership, its position on ongoing peace negotiations and whether Joseph Kabila will personally issue a detailed public declaration accepting his new responsibilities.
