For more than 50 years, the Kenworth C500 has been one of the most capable severe-duty trucks on the market, earning a reputation in industries like heavy haul, mining, logging, and oilfield operations. But with Kenworth ending production of its legacy 1.9-meter cab truck platform, the company has been forced to replace the C500 with the new C580. In this video, CCJ Video Producer Lawson Rudisill travels to PACCAR's Technical Center in Washington for an early look at the C580 before production begins in January 2027. At the time of the visit, the two trucks featured in this video were the only two C580s in existence. To learn why the C500 is being retired and what has changed with its replacement, Lawson spoke with Kenworth Vocational Marketing Manager Alex Reid. While the C580 introduces Kenworth's newer 2.1-meter cab platform, updated technology, Cummins X15 engine options, and the Eaton Endurant XD Pro transmission, much of the proven severe-duty hardware remains unchanged. Because the truck now uses Kenworth's newer cab platform, this video also explores the benefits of increased commonality with trucks like the T880 and what those changes could mean for fleet operators. Of course, this trip to Washington wouldn't have been complete without getting behind the wheel. During the visit, Lawson drove both a domestic-spec winch tractor configuration and an export-spec 6x6 version designed for Middle Eastern oilfield applications. The video shares first impressions from behind the wheel, discussing visibility, ride quality, and cab noise, while comparing the ride quality differences between the two trucks.
