Breastfeeding Through Grief: Jennifer's Story of Loss, Anxiety and Second Chances

Jennifer’s story is one of perseverance, grief, anxiety and ultimately joy. Shortly after the birth of her first child, her mother became terminally ill and died just weeks later. Caught between caring for a newborn and saying goodbye to her mother, Jennifer describes feeling torn, overwhelmed and consumed by anxiety while trying to establish breastfeeding. Despite weight-loss concerns, feeding plans and a lack of clear guidance, support from local breastfeeding services helped her continue. Years later, breastfeeding a second child brought a very different experience—one marked by confidence, enjoyment and healing. Jennifer reflects on the impact of maternal mental health, the importance of compassionate support, breastfeeding through grief, and how her second feeding journey gave her a chance to rediscover the joy she felt she had missed the first time around. “I had a little person that kept shouting and screaming at me and I wanted to be with my mum but I needed to be with him as well and my husband did take him off and he would have formula he would have bottled, he had what he needed at that point what he needed to have and for both of us really and but it was still predominantly breastfeeding.
