Britain's answer was Operation Pedestal, one of the most desperate and fiercely contested convoy missions of the Second World War. German and Italian aircraft, submarines and warships were waiting as the convoy entered the Mediterranean. The sailors knew the odds. They also knew what was at stake. This remarkable BBC Saturday Night Theatre production has an extraordinary connection to the real events: Writer Frederick Treves was there. As a young Merchant Navy cadet, Treves sailed in the actual Operation Pedestal. His ship was bombed and many of the men aboard were killed. Decades later, he turned those experiences into this powerful radio drama.
