26. Driving Beneficiary Impact from Data: Lessons from 1000 Days Fund

1000 Days Fund works to end childhood stunting in Indonesia. As their programs grew, so did a data problem: more than 10 sources across Kobo, Google Forms and paper, with teams spending hours cleaning and joining data before they could use it. Over seven months, 1000 Days Fund worked with Dalgo.org to change that. Their data now flows into an organisation owned warehouse, with automated cleaning and transformation, Superset dashboards, and data quality issues routed back to field teams for correction. But the biggest change was not just saving time. It was what the team could ask of their data. Three Lessons from 1000 Days Fund: 1. Start with the questions, not the dashboard - The team moved from asking broad questions like average training scores to understanding who completed training, how individual scores changed and where follow up was needed. 2. Data quality is part of program delivery - Duplicate health worker records, inconsistent geography and simple data entry errors can distort program numbers. The team shows how these issues were identified and addressed. 3. Good data creates a feedback loop - Instead of waiting for problems to appear in a report weeks later, implausible height and weight values can be flagged and routed back to the field for correction.
