On October 13, 1775, while America was still fighting to become a nation, the Continental Congress authorized two armed vessels— And from that modest beginning grew the Navy we honor today. “From Two Ships to Every Sea” celebrates the extraordinary journey from wooden hulls, canvas sails, and cannon smoke to nuclear submarines, aircraft carriers, naval aviation, destroyers, and fleets serving across the world’s oceans. God bless America and God bless all our brave sailors. (Lyrics and Music by Dr. Donny "Rocker" Deever ‪@America250Band‬) [Intro] Before the carriers crossed the oceans, before the submarines ran deep, before the wings rose from the water, there was a promise we would keep. Two ships were called to serve a nation still fighting to be free— And from those decks began the journey… From two ships to every sea. [Verse 1] In seventeen seventy-five, when liberty was young, Congress called for armed vessels and a Navy was begun. No mighty fleet stood waiting, no empire flew our flag, just sailors learning wind and water, canvas pulling at the mast. Then frigates carved their legends, and Constitution earned her fame, from distant Mediterranean waters to eighteen-twelve's hard flame. A young republic found its sea legs where courage met the foam— And every watch another sailor helped carry freedom home. [Chorus] From two ships to every sea, from sailcloth to the sky, from wooden decks and cannon smoke to wings that thunder by. Through every generation, the watch passed faithfully— From seventy seventy-five to ships on every sea. Raise the colors. Sound the call. Let the old traditions ring. For the sailors who have stood the watch and the legacy they bring— From two ships to every sea, still strong, still proud, still free— Happy birthday U.S. Navy, guarding freedom on the sea. [Verse 2] Then iron replaced the timber, steam replaced the sail; Steel hulls crossed the oceans through the thunder and the gale. Battleships grew mighty, submarines slipped deep below, and aircraft rose from Navy decks to ranges ships could never go. Then came a world at war again, with oceans set alight; At Midway, sailors turned the tide and history learned their might. Across the broad Pacific, through Atlantic wind and spray, they carried war toward victory and brought a freer day. [Verse 3] Then atoms drove the submarines, jets streaked above the blue; Carrier decks became the runways where another age broke through. Silent boats beneath the surface, surface ships across the tide, naval wings above the oceans, watching distant waters wide. Through Korea and through Vietnam, through crisis, storm, and strife; Through rescue, watch, and presence, through the ordinary life of standing midnight duty, when the world may never know— The Navy kept the watch alive wherever sailors go. [Bridge] The ships have changed a thousand ways. The oceans are the same. The weapons change, the engines change— But not the sailor's name. Somebody takes the midnight watch. Somebody tends the line. Someone keeps the engines turning. Someone answers every time. And when one watch is finished, another sailor takes the helm. That's how two ships became a Navy whose watch now spans the ocean realm. [Verse 4] Today the fleet keeps moving through worlds the first crews never knew— Carrier groups and submarines, destroyers cutting blue. Helicopters, jets, and missiles, networks reaching shore to shore; Yet underneath the newest steel beats something older at the core. It's duty passed through centuries. It's shipmates standing by. It's answering when the nation calls beneath an open sky. It is knowing when your watch begins, you serve it faithfully— The same old promise carried forward from two ships to every sea. [Final Chorus] From two ships to every sea, two hundred fifty years and more, generation after generation has kept the watch from shore to shore. From canvas nigh to wings that fly, from ocean floor to sky, the Navy changed a thousand times— The reason never died. Raise the colors. Sound the call. Let every harbor hear— To every sailor, then and now, who brought us to this year: From two ships to every sea, still strong, still proud, still free— Happy birthday, U.S. Navy, and all who've kept the watch at sea. [Outro] Two ships. One young nation. One watch that carried on. Beyond two hundred fifty years, from midnight into dawn. And somewhere now, a sailor takes the watch through midnight chill— From two ships to every sea… As our sailors always will.
