In the pine forests of western Latvia, the ground doesn't lie flat. Walk off almost any forest road near Saldus and the earth begins to fold into long shallow furrows that bend at sharp angles. They're trenches. In the spring of 1945, close to 200,000 German soldiers were living in them — not advancing, not retreating, holding a strip of Baltic coast the rest of the war had already passed by. Behind them lay the sea, and home across it. Their generals asked for ships. The ships existed, and the ports stayed open almost to the end. For seven months, the answer from Berlin never changed: they would stay.
