Jesse van Ruller & Maarten Hogenhuis - Pocket Concerts

Coming to you from the studios of the Concertzender / World of Jazz: Pocket Concerts. Featuring this edition: Jesse van Ruller & Maarten Hogenhuis Guitarist Jesse van Ruller and saxophonist Maarten Hogenhuis bring together two generations of Dutch jazz in this intimate Pocket Concerts performance. Van Ruller, a key figure in the Dutch jazz scene and an internationally acclaimed guitarist, won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Guitar Competition in 1995, becoming the first European to receive the award. He has worked with artists including Roy Hargrove, Joe Lovano, Christian McBride and Peter Erskine, while releasing numerous albums as a leader and sideman. His album Catch! was nominated for an Edison Award. Maarten Hogenhuis belongs to a younger generation of leading Dutch jazz musicians. He is known for his work with the powerjazz group BRUUT!, his own trio and quartet, and collaborations with artists ranging from Benjamin Herman and Anton Goudsmit to Pete Philly & Perquisite. He won Best Soloist at the Dutch Jazz Competition in 2012, followed by the Keep an Eye International Jazz Award for Best Soloist and Best Band in 2013, as well as the Laren Singer Jazz Award in 2014. The duo first released Spirits High in 2021. Their second album, Follow the Sound, brings their shared musical language further, with compositions developed together and influences extending well beyond traditional jazz. Together, Van Ruller and Hogenhuis bring two distinct generations of Dutch jazz together, combining Van Ruller’s decades of international experience with Hogenhuis’s contemporary voice. Mengelberg) *Digging the Archives 15:10 Tideline (J. van Ruller) *Digging the Archives Misha Mengelberg (1935–2017) was one of the most influential figures in Dutch improvised jazz. As a pianist, composer and co-founder of the Instant Composers Pool, he helped shape a distinctly Dutch approach to free improvisation. His composition Rumbone combines a playful, rhythmic character with his characteristic sense of surprise and openness. In Digging the Archives, the piece is revisited by a new generation of musicians, connecting Mengelberg’s legacy with the present.
