Japanese Dance with Yukari Onoe Ep.1 | The History of Nihon Buyō, from Myth to Kabuki

Where does Japanese dance begin? Yukari Onoe traces Nihon Buyō back to a goddess dancing before a sealed cave. Nihon Buyō, classical Japanese dance, has its roots in Kabuki. The origin of dance itself is said to lie in myth, when Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto danced to draw Amaterasu Ōmikami out of the Ama-no-Iwato, the heavenly rock cave. Kabuki began with Izumo no Okuni dancing in the flamboyant dress of the kabukimono in Kyoto, and by the Taishō era dancers independent of Kabuki had formed their own schools.
