She was also remembered as the sister of Hippolyta, another celebrated Amazon queen. According to one ancient tradition, Penthesilea accidentally killed Hippolyta while hunting. Haunted by guilt, she traveled to Troy, where King Priam received and purified her. Other traditions place greater emphasis on her hunger for battle, honor, and heroic glory. Penthesilea arrived at Troy after the death of Hector, when the city’s greatest defender had already fallen and the Trojans were losing hope. Leading her Amazon warriors into the Trojan War, she fought with such courage and power that she became one of the most formidable opponents ever to face the Greek army. Her arrival, battle, and death were told in the lost epic “Aethiopis,” part of the ancient Trojan Epic Cycle. This story does not appear in the surviving text of Homer’s “Iliad,” which ends before Penthesilea reaches Troy. Later authors, including Pseudo-Apollodorus and Quintus Smyrnaeus, preserved different versions of her legend. Her story ultimately leads to a famous confrontation with Achilles. Penthesilea falls by his hand, and later tradition describes Achilles looking upon the fallen queen with admiration, sorrow, or love. That tragic moment made her one of the most haunting figures connected with the Trojan War. But this song chooses another moment. Here, Penthesilea is still alive. She is not seen through the grief of Achilles or remembered only for the way she died. She is seen through the eyes of the Amazon women riding beside her—as their queen, their sister, and the living flame at the head of their army. The repeated “we” in the lyrics belongs to those women: “Our shields are raised, our hearts are one.” “One heart, one shield, one vow for all.” The Amazons were imagined in Greek myth and art as a nation of warrior women who rode horses, carried bows and spears, and lived beyond the ordinary rules of the Greek world. Their characteristic crescent-shaped pelta shields became one of their most recognizable symbols.
