The Sumerian Text Reveals the Story of a Lost City No One Has Found

A lost city described in ancient Sumerian texts. A powerful kingdom beyond seven mountain ranges. A place of gold, silver, lapis lazuli, and secrets that have remained buried for thousands of years. Yet despite its appearance in one of Mesopotamia’s oldest surviving stories, no one has definitively identified its location. In this documentary, we explore the mysterious city of Aratta, described in the Sumerian epic Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta. The ancient text tells of a rivalry between two kingdoms, the goddess Inanna, a dangerous journey through distant mountains, and a confrontation that raises questions about the earliest civilizations. Was Aratta a real city whose ruins remain undiscovered, a distant kingdom remembered through legend, or a literary creation reflecting Sumerian beliefs about power and the gods? Through ancient Sumerian tablets, historical evidence, and competing interpretations, we investigate what the original texts actually reveal about this forgotten city—and why its location remains one of the enduring mysteries of ancient Mesopotamia. #ancienthistory #mesopotamia #sumerians
