The year is 642, and the Northumbrian king lays dead on the battlefield, slain by the forces of King Penda of the Mercians at the Battle of Maserfield. Oswald, the great Christian king and overlord over the Anglo-Saxons who had turned back the coalition of the British king Cadwallon and Penda was now dismembered alongside his formerly dominant kingdom.
