Announcer Commentary/Interview-Wynton Marsalis/Joe Z
Original comments: "I just found this while searching through some old discs. I'd received this in a cd-r trade long ago with a NYC location and date of 2007/07/06. That date seemed problematic because Joe and the Syndicate appeared in Switzerland in 2007 on July 7th. That performance was on Joe's 75th birthday, and was officially released on Heads Up in 2008 (although I think a XXXXX version of the show has snuck up here on XXXX a few times over the years!). Joe wasn't long for this world at that point in time, so it always seemed unlikely to do a NYC gig one day, and then show up in Switzerland the next. Some digging around at Curt Bianchi's excellent Weather Report site led to finding out that this Rose Theater NYC show came from either October 26th or 27th of 2006. The confusion came from the broadcast date of that material being 2007-07-06, presumably to honor Joe's 75th. Some material was found online pertaining to the shows, and it's pasted in below for those who might find it interesting:
"The Zawinul Syndicate Rose Hall NY-
Fusion Revolution: The Zawinul Syndicate: Austrian Joe Zawinul commands the Zawinul Syndicate, a genre-bending superband with players from South America and Africa. On his keyboard and compositions, this father of fusion (Weather Report, etc.) brings a basket of global ideas rhythms, scales and melodies to this rare Rose Hall performance.
Fusion Revolution: Joe Zawinul Syndicate
Featuring Joe Zawinul
October 27 & 28, 2006, 8pm, Rose Theater
By combining jazz elements with soul jazz and funk elements, this program focuses on the 70's fusion movement birthed from the Miles Davis era. Master of the synthesizer, Joe Zawinul, from the legendary band Weather Report, explores this melding in his debut performance at Rose Theater."
This share finds the Syndicate playing 5 Weather Report songs among the 8 tracks played. It's also a little curious in that Wynton Marsalis [bfpg's note: art director for the Jazz at Lincoln Center] is the announcer talking about Joe Z and introducing the songs throughout the share. Wynton, of course, had been the "poster boy" for the Young Lions movement in jazz in the late 70's/early 80's, and that very conservative movement marked a sea change against the fusion that had so dominated jazz trough much of the 70's. Wynton and the other "Lions" had actually made fusion unfashionable in a similar way to what punk and new wave had done to the Prog giants of the 70's. In any case, Wynton is here extolling the virtues of Joe Z. It's pretty nice actually.
I've seen a version of this where Wynton and the interview sections were cut out of the share. That version seems to have been what was here on XXXX over 10 years ago, at the only time the archive shows it running here (under the erroneous date). Those grabbing this are certainly free to still delete those commentary track files, but I elected to leave them in the order where they'd appeared in the broadcast for context and the insights they provide. There's also music being played in spots where a voiceover from Wynton either introduces things, or closes out the show.
I tracked this in Audacity, and changed the tracking of 13 and 14 to coincide with the end of the great Linley Marthe bass solo, but nothing else was done there, and no sonic changes were attempted. I've also included the track names that had been missing in that earlier XXXX share, and I've corrected the personnel to show that Paco Sery (from Sixun, and a frequent Joe Z collaborator) wasn't the drummer here. Many thanks to whoever sent this in my direction, and to whoever it was that grabbed this from whatever spot JALC might've once presented it."
Thanks to Swissbird & the providential jswetch!
